St Nons
St Non's sits proudly on the cliff top within a mile or so of the small city of
St Davids, overlooking the whole of St Bride's bay and the off shore islands of
Skomer and Skokholm.
The site is named after
St Non the mother of St David. David is said to have been born here around 500AD, the site now is a
ruined chapel which you cross a field to access, in the corner of the chapel there is a stone Celtic cross this has become known as, " the Cross of St Non".
From the chapel there are breathtaking views across the whole of St Bride's bay and from the corner of the field there is wooden stile leading onto the Pembrokeshire coast path, if you go right you will be heading for
Porthclais Harbour and left to
Caerfai Bay.
There is also a, "
Well" at the site this is reputed to have sprung up during a storm when St David was born, it is regarded as one of the most sacred wells in Wales. The water is considered to having healing and miraculous powers.
Even after the Reformation the well continued to be frequented by the faithful, it was fully restored and rededicated by the Passionist Fathers in 1951.
At the same time a small shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary was placed opposite the well. This is now small peaceful garden and well worth visiting if you are in St Davids
Above the well and the ruined chapel there is a large stone built
Catholic retreat, in the gardens ther is a small chapel, named the chapel of "Our Lady of St Non".
This is very small and is built from stones from the many earlier ruined pre-reformation chapels in the area, however the chapel was only built in 1934 by Mr Cecil Hubert Morgan Griffiths, a Carmarthen solicitor.
There are several attractive stained glass windows in the chapel, depticting the following saints " Saints - Non, David, Bride, Brynach and Winifred, as well as various carved stones in the alter which make it quite unusual.
The Celtic Coast (coastal bus) regularly stops at the little car park at St Non"s, useful if you want a lift back to St Davids or on to one of the nearby beaches.
