The Dovecote is an idyllic romantic round tower hideaway for two situated in the beautiful Lower Wye Valley in the border county of the Welsh Marches. Offa's Dyke follows the River Wye below the Dovecote and the old railway line with its bridge at The Boat Inn (10 minutes walk and serves a selection of guest ales and great pub food) offers excellent walking. The cottage is one of the last on the former Duke of Beaufort's Estate and within a few minutes of the site where in 1404 Owain Glyndwr won the battle of Craig y Dorth against Henry IV's English army. This tower is a real "find" and not to be missed.

Accommodation

Set out over four levels, the entrance leads you into the cottage kitchen, which has a high vaulted and beamed ceiling with chandeliers and a stone flagstone floor. There is a stone inglenook with Rayburn range, ideal for toasting your feet after a long walk, and the kitchen is fully fitted with a range of bespoke oak cupboards and worktops. Facilities include an electric oven and gas hob, Rayburn range, dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave oven and there is an antique pine dining table and 4 chairs. From the kitchen a hallway leads to the round tower with several short flights of curved steps leading you to the 3 levels. On the first floor is the very spacious and luxurious circular bathroom with a white suite of freestanding roll top bath, separate curved shower cubicle, WC and wash hand basin. On the next floor is the circular bedroom which has a kingsize brass bedstead, Hat stand hanging rail, chest of drawers, bedside tables and 4 slit windows giving views of the garden and woodland surrounds. The bed will be made up with crisp linen for your arrival and towels are included. More curved steps lead to a door which opens onto the drawbridge and out into the garden and woodland. Continuing on up the Dovecote tower, the final flight of curved steps lead to the sitting room which has an oak floor and is furnished with a comfortable sofa, Windsor chair, coffee table, colour TV, DVD player, bookcase with a good selection of books and games and an unusual cartwheel light fitting. Glorious views of the Wye Valley. A travel cot is available on request. One well-behaved small dog is welcome but must stay in the kitchen. No smoking in the tower. There is full oil fired central heating throughout and a solid fuel range. Heating and fuel are included from May to September and charged at a flat rate of £20 at all other times. There is a washing machine, iron/board available on request in an out building. Parking for two cars. The owner lives in the neighbouring cottage. The garden area is lawned and planted and backed by 2 acres of private ancient woodland where you may be lucky enough to see the wild deer that the owner has to regularly chase out of the garden!

With just 4 miles to Little Haven, almost 4 to Broad Haven and 2 miles to Haverfordwest, this architect designed annexe makes an ideal base for a Pembrokeshire holiday. Little Haven is a tiny village with a great beach nestling between the cliffs, at low tide you can walk around to Broad Haven beach which is much larger. There are several places to have a meal or a drink in each village and the Coastal Path makes great walking at any time of the year. The Celtic Trail cycle path runs through the village of Portfield Gate. Haverfordwest is Pembrokeshire's County Town and has a good selection of shops and there are plenty of interesting places and activities available locally.
