An area of outstanding scenic beauty, the Elan Valley is situated due west of Rhayader. The valley contains a series of 5 reservoirs. From north to south they are names as follows: Confa Ddwr Graif Goch, Penygarreg Reservoir, Garreg Ddu Reservoir, Caban-coch Reservoir and Dolymynach Reservoir.
The whole valley is easily accessible with a good network of roads and small lanes which allow you the option of seeing the valley’s beauty from the comfort of your car.
The area is popular with walkers, water sport enthusiasts and paragliders enjoying the area also. You can also visit the visitor centre for info on the area which also houses a shop and cafe.
Where the road crosses over the river joining Penygarreg and Garreg-ddu reservoirs you will find a small car park. There is a lovely walk along the joining river here up to Penygarreg Dam, cross over the foot bridge at the base of the dam to walk up the side of the valley up to the top of the dam.
Places to grab a bite to eat in the Elan Valley include the Elan Valley Visitor Centre where there is a cafe, or head along to Rhyader to find The Triangle Inn.
