A Welsh Man Created the Equals (=) Sign<\/h2>\n<p>The modern &#8216;=&#8217; (equals) sign was invented by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Recorde\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Recorde<\/a> in 1557. Robert Recorde was a Welsh physician and mathematician, born in Tenby, Wales in 1512. Not only did he invent the equals sign, but he also introduced the pre-existing plus sign (+) to English speakers in 1557.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>2. Wales Created Locomotives in 1804<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.welsh-cottages.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/06\/train-3804262_640.jpg\" alt=\"welsh facts\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Trevithick\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Trevithick<\/a> was a British inventor and mining engineer. He created a locomotive that made its maiden journey on the 21st of February 1804 &#8211; 25 years before the maiden journey of Stevenson&#8217;s Rocket. The loco managed to haul 10 tons of iron some 9.75 miles along the Merthyr Tydfil Tramroad.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>3. Our trees are over five thousand years old<\/h2>\n<p>There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atlasobscura.com\/places\/llangernyw-yew\" rel=\"noopener\">Yew tree in Conwy<\/a> believed to be four to five thousand years old, making it one of the oldest living organisms on Earth. It can be found at St Dygain&#8217;s Church at Llangernyw.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>4. We&#8217;re Big Money Makers<\/h2>\n<p>We make more money in Wales than the rest of the UK put together. This is only because the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalmint.com\/our-coins?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7d2Fvq2W5AIVgrTtCh17AQ4xEAAYASAAEgJZo_D_BwE\" rel=\"noopener\">Royal Mint<\/a> is based at Llantrisant in Wales.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>5. Canned Beer? We Were One of the First!<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1777\" src=\"https:\/\/www.welsh-cottages.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/06\/iStock-1148755120-1.jpg\" alt=\"welsh beer\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wales was one of the first countries to commercially can beer. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.felinfoel.com\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Felinfoel Brewery<\/a> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.welsh-cottages.co.uk\/llanelli-holiday-cottages.html\">Llanelli<\/a> first started putting beer in cans during 1931 and they still produce beer in cans today.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>6. We&#8217;re Home to one of the Longest Place Names in the World<\/h2>\n<p>Yep, that&#8217;s right! Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwll-llantysiliogogogoch can be found in Anglesey, North Wales. It roughly translates to &#8220;The Church of St Mary in the hollow of the white hazel near the rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio near a red cave&#8221;, but you&#8217;ll find most locals referring to it as Llanfairpwll or Llanfair PG.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>7. You&#8217;ll find the UK&#8217;s Deepest Cave in South Wales<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1778\" src=\"https:\/\/www.welsh-cottages.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/06\/cave-1909324_640.jpg\" alt=\"welsh cave\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Ogof Ffynnon Ddu is a 37-miles limestone cave under a hillside in the Upper Swansea Valley in South Wales.
