D “We absolutely loved our stay at the Vestry.”
We did not expect a mansion or a brand new paint job so we were not disappointed. What we loved was the open-plan living room / kitchen... the lovely views from the living room... being able to bring our two dogs with us... being so close to amenities and the sea... Generally we found the house to be clean and comfortable. If I were to suggest anything it is that the mattress in the main bedroom was uncomfortable and could do with replacing and (for me personally) I am allergic to the washing power / fabric softener that many BnB's and Airbnb's use it brings me out in a rash and it is lucky I am prepared for this and bring all our bedding and towels with us because the vestry use the stuff that I am allergic too. We didn't have any problem with the shower, its a bit outdated but totally fine really... the only other thing was that as the bedrooms are downstairs we found we needed to put the heating on while we were out during the day to stop the rooms down there from feeling damp. This was no hardship as the heating sorted it out :-) Every house has its quirks and we were there long enough to find viable solutions. We think the Vestry is a GREAT holiday destination and look forward to staying again.
- D, September 2021David “Whilst the location of the cottage is excellent, we were very disappointed with the standard of accommodation.”
It seemed very tired and shabby, the oven markings were worn out so you couldn't tell what the temperature was. It was extremely difficult to operate the shower. Other guests had commented on this and the owners response was basically 'it is was it is'! The twin beds and bedding was poor standard. It had the feel of a youth hostel, but not at youth hostel prices!
- David, September 2021Rebecca “We have stayed at the Vestry several times, its a property we enjoy for its huge living space upstairs.”
However it hasn't been updated at all in over five years and is starting to look very tired. Positives: the upstairs space is great, huge table and plenty of seating. The shower/ washing machine and toilet in the outhouse is very handy post beach visits. New stove looked great although we were unable to use it. Negatives: The main bathroom shower is STILL difficult to use, I noted from comments in the visitors book that nearly every visitor found it hard to figure out. The owners say that they have tried to fix it but failed. Suggestion: Simply get a new shower installed. Kitchen: there is a good range of cabinets but most of them are very full of a rather odd collection of crockery, the house has over 30 mugs and lots of plates (a few too many to be honest) but several were chipped. Two big cupboards full of slightly random cooking equipments but no good knives, frying pan, grater, rolling pin or pizza trays There are some glasses but very few wine glasses. The table seats 8, and there are easily enough plates to have ten or more people round, but you'd be reduced to using tumblers for wine. Again a couple of the glasses were chipped. Suggestion: have a thorough clear out of the cupboards and stock them with equipment/crockery for 8 people. The house sleeps 6, no need for all the extras. This would give space for food stuff - there is only one cupboard for food - you can of course rearrange the other cupboards but that takes time and really isn't the purpose of being on holiday. Also despite the instructions in the book, there were numerous packets of half opened food (some out of date) left in the cupboards. This feel very unhygienic. Suggestion: the cleaner to remove all opened leftover food. Decor: Very tired, I like the comfy clubhouse feel of the property, so no need for it to be changed but a fresh coat of paint is badly needed in some areas and the curtains/bedding needs changing. (noticed that the duvet covers in the bunkbed room have been the same for around 5/6 years) In addition several of the blankets in the living room had what I assume were dog hairs on them. A fresh coat of paint and a change of some of the furnishings, replacing those that are very worn. The beds in the twin room are not that comfortable, new mattresses and fitted sheets please! (the flat sheets didn't tuck round the mattress properly and got rucked up.) None of the bins had liners in, we only discovered this when putting some soiled cleaning wipes into the bathroom bin. This is unhygenic and I imagine makes the cleaners life fairly unpleasant. No hoover, this makes keeping the upstairs clean quite difficult. Bins: I really appreciate Pembrokeshire council recycling as it recycles more than our home council, however there was a lack of instructions about the updated recycling arrangements. Also when we investigated there was no bin for household waste, and no glass recycling bin. No logs supplied for stove and no instructions for the heating, we visited in late august during quite a cold week and found it very chilly in the evenings. Post a cold swim we looked forward to the stove, particularly as the description of the property states that logs will be supplied. As a general point, the picture of the churchyard is misleading, it is NOT the properties garden and if visitors are permitted to use it this needs to be made very clear.
- Rebecca, August 2021Rachel “We absolutely loved our stay at the Vestry, such a quirky cottage with loads of character .”
The location is great, very close to the shops & pubs, the mountain & the beach. The upstairs living room, kitchen / dining room was very comfy & bright, the open plan layout was lovely & great for socialising with the family & our local friends. The views are great & our teens enjoyed stargazing in the graveyard next door! There were some great DVD's & jigsaws too. Although the beds were comfy, the downstairs was a little gloomy & could do with some modernising . The bathroom could be easily improved with a new shower curtain & a lick of paint & the bunk- bed room needs a bedside lamp .There were a few lightbulbs missing here & there & there were a lot of cobwebs around the windows upstairs .It wasn't made that clear that the washing machine & ironing board are in a separate utility room outside - we didn't discover this until the day we were leaving & looking for the dustbins! Overall though we really really enjoyed our stay & would love to come back again next year . Rachel Rumbold
- Rachel, July 2021Sean “The Vestry is shabby and in dire need of updating.”
Shower curtains are mouldy. All the oven tray and racks were covered in grease. 3 toilet rolls for a family of 6 for 1 week. Really? Cleaner was there for an hour after our check in time.
- Sean, July 2021Our cleaners are dependent on previous guests leaving properties promptly and as they found them and for new guests to arrive no earlier than the check in time. Sadly, this is not always the case. In this instance, the cleaner was happy to finish her work at the property (including fitting a new shower curtain), despite the guests arriving early, but this was declined by the guests. As the property is self-catering, items such as loo rolls are provided at the owner’s discretion. Property Owner
Ian “Old property so we expected a bit of damp but unfortunately the master bedroom had such a smell of drains it led to a move into the twin room for the week.”
The power for the shower was excellent but the old leaking head and impossible to shut off lever - unless standing outside the bath are not acceptable (as noted by others in their comments book) nor is a shower curtain with mould stains on it. The property is tired, particularly bedrooms, bathroom, paintwork, and given the prolonged period of covid closure should have been upgraded and thoroughly cleaned/painted. Sykes pictures show what appears to be a huge back garden, which is in fact part of the church and grave yard next door, we used it as we had a dog and weather was great but were not sure if allowed? Parking an issue when busy. After many bookings with Sykes this one was disappointing.
- Ian, June 2021Sally “A gorgeous, quirky holiday home in an excellent location to access 2 coastal path walks, 2 beaches, shops and some amazing places to eat.”
We loved The Golden Lion and The Castle, our son loved the pizza from The Canteen. We didn’t use our car at all!
