Description
Myrtle Cottage is a homely, single-storey cottage resting amongst a courtyard of converted farm buildings in St Brides-super-Ely, Glamorgan. Surrounded by green fields, with cattle and horses, while being within reach of the capital city of Cardiff by car, Myrtle Cottage makes an ideal base for a family or friends to explore what South Wales has to offer. When you arrive, step into the open-plan living space, sure to be the social hub of the home throughout your stay. From here, head upstairs to find two neat and bright bedrooms, a double and twin, where you can get some rest after a fun-filled day with loved ones. Completing the property is a bathroom with both a bath and shower over, perfect if you need a quick freshen up or a long soak after a day of walking. Outside, savour your morning coffee or dine alfresco in the warmer evenings, with the idyllic greenery around you and the gentle grazing of the animals in the adjoining fields - a hit with the children! You can find a handful of convenience stores and fast-food restaurants within a short drive, where you can enjoy a night away from the kitchen. What guests are saying
We stayed from 15th to 17th June in Myrtle cottage, there were 4 of us all adults.
We were warmly met upon arrival and let into the property. Which was quiet and spacious for its size providing a comfortable cosy feel. The 2 bedrooms 1 double the other twin were ideal and all beds comfortable. The lounge / dining area was also spacious enough for what we wanted, it was kitted out with all white goods except washer and dryer which was available if needed in the laundry room for a small charge but we didn't use it. The oven and hob were very quick cooking and the fridge kept the beers cold lol. The view to the rear with wooden pub style seating was lovely, yes the M4 was on the horizon behind trees and yes you could just hear it if you bothered to, however growing up under a heathrow airport runway flight path this very distance noise was not a problem especially if you were inside. Parking onsite was good and safe Easy access to M4 and Cardiff and other areas however the approach road is very much a rural single track road but take care slow down and its fine. My only thing was the TV, we couldn't get it to show freeview. So we tried our firestick and unfortunately the wifi was very poor and through the provided repeater. That would be my only thing that let's it down. We resorted to using our phone to create a hotspot and log the firestick to it, but we do have unlimited data accounts. Just food for thought. Otherwise it is a lovely place, I would recommend it and would stay again.
The cottage was very nice, and a good size, but I’m afraid there are a lot of issues.
Guests need to be aware how very remote it is. It is up a single track, very difficult to find, and you just hope that you don’t meet a car in the opposite direction; as there are very few pull ins to allow passing, (although this can be said of a lot of the local roads though). On your way from the cottage there is also a very dangerous left turn at the fork in the track to navigate a where the road turns left and falls away and would “bottom” a car at the very least. This means that any Sat nav directions need overruling as you have to turn right to avoid this left turn. Main road and track signage is not clear as it refers to names of cottages different from the names of the cottages advertised and it’s not clear that these are actually the signs you need to follow. We ended up on arrival in a big detached property as these signs did not make any sense to us and we had to about turn. WiFi is poor (especially as the Roku TV relies on the wifi signal); and the tv channel reception is not very good and buffering. I ended up using my mobile data and “hot spotting” my firestick to watch TV but it was very intense on my monthly data. The cooker extractor fan was filthy as was the oven which was disgustingly dirty. We also felt the need to pre-wash cutlery, plates, worktops etc before we used them, as they were greasy to touch. The bathroom is very dated and needs modernising and the back patio looks as if it’s not had any maintenance for a long time, being overgrown with weeds. One of the single beds nearest the door needs the mattress replacing as you can feel the springs. That said, the cottage does have potential but needs a deep clean, and money spending on it. (possibly new carpets/bathroom updating). We didn’t complain to the owners as we managed to work round some of these issues ourselves to make it comfortable but we would not return.
Pleasant enough stay.
It was good value but a case of getting what you pay for. Accommodation was nicely dressed but the fixtures and fittings were very rough around the edges. Plus the WiFi didn’t work a lot of the time, TV signal was awful. WiFi router made an awful constant noise. Cleanliness wasn’t ideal, there was an old dusty sock on one of the floors when we arrived and a lot of cobwebs and crumbs around. Wasn’t the easiest place to find, and not the most welcoming at first as an older lady accosted us when we arrived claiming we hadn’t requested a cotbed or highchair (we had, using two different means - and they were in the cottage waiting for us). The cottage was spacious and comfortable, it was nice having all the owners animals around (albeit periodic dogs loud barking at night when we had the windows open due to the heat), and it was a nice and private experience. If you’re on a tight budget and looking for a comfortable place to stay for a few days then this place represented good value and I would recommend it.
