The Pound

We loved our week at this gorgeous cottage while renovations were carried out at our home.

It has everything you need for a "home from home" relaxing holiday and is very clean, warm, cosy and comfortable. Everything has been provided for and the welcome pack of eggs, coffee, tea, welsh cakes and milk were greatly appreciated. Unlike other reviews, we saw no spiders and the traffic noise wasn't intrusive and only noticeable at peak times. We slept like logs in the comfy bed and enjoyed the constant, piping hot water for baths and showers (and the radox bubbles) It was great to meet the owner who was friendly and helpful but not obtrusive in any way. Thankyou very much for having us and our little dog Buddy who loved his "Pound adventure" too.

My only concern is that the garden is not secure for dog's, as the Driveway gate's are always left open to the main road.

A spacious,well equipped property in a nice little village with a good put just a few hundred yards away.

The friendly owner lives in the house next door and so is on hand to answer any queries.

Warm and sincere greeting by owners on arrival and genuinely pet friendly. Some traffic noise but not obtrusive and the cottage was conveniently situated for Monmouth, Tintern and the Wye Valley. We had a lovely stay.

Charming small cottage in the garden of the owners home.

Jean was very welcoming and available for any queries without being intrusive. Lovely welcome gifts of Welsh cakes, milk and eggs. The noise from passing traffic isn’t a problem overnight and the bed is extremely comfortable. Field across the road handy for walking the dog and a doggy litter bin near it for disposing of waste. Also allowed to take the dog in the garden which is handy for morning and evening needs. I didn’t require the outside table and chairs but the area isn’t particularly attractive. No sign of any spiders during my stay as previously mentioned. Property was immaculate. Pleasant village pub and Monmouth not too far for shopping.

'The Pound' was an ideal base for our week's break exploring the Wye valley.

Jean (the owner) was an excellent host, communication was easy and helpful before / throughout our stay. Country walks from the doorstep, sited on the edge of an interesting village, and with good road links etc. Warm and cosy despite the bitter January weather, this historic stone cottage really worked for the two of us.

A cosy, historic cottage in a great location for walking and viewing the many Castles & attractions in the Wye Valley & beyond to the Forest of Dean.

A very comfortable bed and had the benefit of two bathrooms. Superb food at friendly pub in the village. Could be a bit noisy at times with joy riding bikers speeding past but didn't bother us. Jean was a very obliging host and we hope to return to the area in the future

Lovely village and the cottage is in an ideal position for seeing south wales … the cottage it self was lovely but in need of a deep clean as it was very dusty in places.

. the hosts are lovely people very friendly and let us use there garden for the dogs .. very good of the road parking.. kitchen could be looked at a bit ..the cooker is ok but needs updating as seal gone on oven and leaked condensation onto floor rather a lot .. in need of oven trays ect .. but having said that we had a lovely holiday much needed r+r ..

The Pound was an incredible stay!

The cottage has everything you can think of to make it feel like home. It is beautiful internally and externally and the garden is gorgeous. The hosts are very welcoming and helpful. Would definitely recommend this property. I could have happily stayed for longer!

The property was not of a good standard with its cleanliness, the washing machine was filthy, there were cobwebs all over the ceiling, dust under and behind the bed, the tiles in the kitchen were dirty, the surround around the shower was dirty, we came home early because we didn’t want to be there, i took photos of the property to prove how unclean it was.

.all it needed was a good clean round with a hoover with a nozzle and a good wipe round the tiles in the kitchen, the surround in the shower needs re tiling and the drain outlet in the shower needs replacing or cleaning.

Lovely time at the Pound, all positive, owner very helpful.

We spent two weeks in this lovely cottage.

Jean the owner was very friendly and helpful and the Welsh cakes, eggs and cold beer in the fridge were very welcome. The Lion Inn is about 200 yards away and we had several excellent meals there chatting with the locals. The road noise could be a problem for some, but didn't bother us.

We enjoyed our stay at this cottage the description is accurate, the traffic noise wasn't too bad as it's not a major road.

We just found the lack of outdoor space restricting especially with the dog Jean did say we could use her garden but we didn't like to. The spiders and cobwebs were everywhere which I suppose you can expect with an old property but maybe providing a hoover might be a better option than just a brush especially when you have dogs staying.

Lovely Cottage, comfortable, stylish and very well equipped.

Trelleck is a nice village and the Lion is a fantastic pub. The adjacent B road can be noisy very early in the morning (tractors etc), and busy with commuters morning and evening, but the rest of the time is not intrusive. Do not plan any walks that require you to walk along the B road as some people drive too fast and it is not safe. The Beacon Hill and Ninewells areas to the east have great walking, and can be reached either by walking along the quiet roads to the east of Trelleck or from the carparks that are just over 1km away.

We have been visiting the area for some 15 years now but this is our first stay on the Welsh side of the Wye Valley.

So glad we made the change! The Pound is a lovely place to stay. Many thanks to Jean who made us very welcome. Once we’ve checked our calendars I’m sure that we will be booking another visit for 2024

A very comfortable cottage, equipped with everything we needed

The Pound was very good.

Cottage as described, comfortable and cosy for a couple and a big dog. Appreciated the goodies left by the friendly owners. Lots of walks locally and further afield with interesting history to explore close by. Do hope to return before too long. Thank you for a good holiday.

Hosts were lovely, welcoming and friendly. Cottage is in a great area, accessible to loads of walking, close to Tintern, Monmouth and Chepstow. We really enjoyed our stay, thank you so much.

lovely cottage in a good location, it is a bit out of the way but it suited us.

the pub is a 5 minute walk and was very cosy. the cottage is beside a road but it wasn't noisy. the hosts were very accommodating, left milk, welsh cakes & eggs for us which was appreciated. had issue with wifi but it was sorted straightaway. we would definitely stay there again.

Tasteful decor throughout. Owner is very friendly. Great countryside for walking with a lovely village pub 5 minute walk away for some superb lunches/evening meals. Definitely a great place to stay.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our stay, lovely and quite.

geese, horses, pesky heron and a short walk to the very welcoming Lion pub enhanced our stay. Thank you, for the much appreciated little extra touches that mean so much and enhance a holiday. The utility area doubled perfectly for little Betsy to sleep in each night. We had a memorable and very comfortable stay and would/will recommend to others wanting to stay in the area. Pleasant weekend in Trellech, the cottage provided everything we needed, lovely walks near by, The owner was very helpfully and obliging, would recommend this cottage, to friends and would return here again.

The cottage was cosy and comfortable. The owner was very friendly and helpful. The slight downside was noise from traffic during the day but it was quiet at night and did not spoil our stay.

We had a lovely stay in The Pound.

The cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We had no mobile signal in the village, which we liked, but the cottage has fantastic WiFi which allowed us to book our activities. There is lots to do in the local area with some great walks nearby. The local pub, The Lion, was lovely. We had a lovely meal there one evening which was very reasonably priced and we regularly called in for a drink in the evening. The staff and locals were very welcoming to both ourselves and our 5 year old son. We would definitely stay at The Pound again if we decide to holiday in that area in the future.

Lovely cosy cottage, made to feel very welcome by Jean & Fifi (Owner & cat), and the little extras left were much appreciated.

My friend and I both brought our cats, they enjoyed as well. :) The roads around the cottage are very noisy, even though you would think they would be quiet as they are just through the village, but people tend to go very fast along them. Not a problem for me as I always take earplugs, but would be an issue for someone wanting total peace and quiet, and no road noise. Also not the cottage to pick if you have arachnophobia, lots of spiders and cobwebs - kept my friends' cat quiet anyway as he likes to catch spiders. :) The single room is probably best suited to a pre-teen as it is very small, having said that the bed was very comfortable and the Velux window is great for blocking out light when you are trying to sleep, and I am quite short so lack of head height was not an issue. This cottage is in a great location for accessing different places of interest. The local (The Lion) do a fabulous Sunday lunch, and the rest of the menu is probably just as delicious.

Lovely cosy cottage with everything we could want for our week.

Milk, eggs and Welsh cakes were appreciated. Great having two bathrooms. Cottage very tidy and generally clean. Double bed very comfortable. Good location for visiting local places such as Monmouth and Abergavenny with its Sugar Loaf mountain. Brilliant views from the top so well worth the effort. Unfortunately no longer a shop in Trellech but that didn’t worry us too much as we didn’t do much cooking. Can definitely recommend the Lion Inn for delicious food and lovely atmosphere. We were blessed with mostly dry sunny weather with only one mornings rain.

The pound was so comfortable and cosy. We had everything we needed and more. Jean made us so welcome and left us milk, eggs. welsh cakes and new potatoes. Lovely pub in the village just 5 mins walk serving excellent food. Lots of interesting walks and things to see in the village. Monmouth is just 5 miles and is a great place to go shopping. Cosy cottage and great if you want a couple of days walking in the Wye Valley area and do not mind being "off the grid".

There is no EE mobile signal or 3G/4G inside the property and the WIFI is very weak. Jean, the owner who lives in the adjacent house, was very helpful and resolved the issue that we had with the central heating quickly. The Welsh cakes were a nice touch too!

This is an amazing little property, so much bigger than outside would suggest.

It is warm and comfortable with everything you need for a relaxing stay. Jean is next door and is like a helpful neighbour if you need her, otherwise she lets you get on with your holiday without interference. The phone signal can be an issue depending on provider but was fine with one of our phones and Jean helps with advice and the use of her landline for incoming calls if required.

Great little cottage ideally placed for exploring the Wye Valley.

Local pub The Lion does decent grub and always a warm welcome. A lovely stay for the money.

We really felt like valued guests and Jean did everything she could for us to be comfortable and well-entertained.

Her advice and recommendations about the local area were invaluable. The cottage was immaculately clean and equipped well beyond our needs, we prepared all but one of our meals there. The downstairs layout worked well and the lounge is more spacious than it appears in the photos. Upstairs there was a beautifully spacious main bedroom and bathroom. The second bedroom was as expected and is comfortable but quite tiny. Wonderful mattresses and pillows. The stairs, usefully for us, had bannisters on both sides. I struggled with the internet connection, but our host came over and helped us out. We will definitely be recommending The Pound to friends.

We enjoyed our week at the Pound, Jean is an excellent host and made us feel very welcome as did all the people we met.

The extra touches were a lovely bonus with milk and eggs, tea and coffee and even some bubble bath. The cottage is excellent for relaxing or for getting out and enjoying the local area. The cottage location is perfect for exploring with walks from the front door and easy access to Tintern with its Abby and surrounding walks, Monmouth is with its shops and history is another must-do. I can honestly say after a busy few months a week at the Pound has left us feeling rejuvenated and relaxed. We are already planning our next visit.

We thoroughly enjoyed our short break to the Pound in Trelleck.

The hosts were extremely kind, they left fresh eggs, milk, tea, coffee, and welsh cakes which was a very thoughtful touch and put up with our 2 collies, the dogs also had a lovely time with loads of country walks in the area. We would definitely recommend.

Well equipped kitchen,cooked all our meals there.Bed very comfortable. Pub nearby which has a restaurant.Unfortunately the local shop has now shut down,with the nearest shop 10 minutes drive away in Llandogo.

The welcome was good,milk bread eggs and welch cakes had been left for us, nice touch.

Good jumping off point for so many interesting places, good local pub with very good food all day.

It was a bit too quiet in the area for us, however, we enjoyed the break.

The Pound is a lovely, cosy cottage, with good amenities and with access to a beautiful garden.

The village of Trelleck is full of history and archaeology in beautiful countryside with wonderful walks. Jean is an excellent host and one of the kindest people I have ever met.

Trellech itself is also a great base; a lot of history for what is now a small village, a great little pub and perfectly positioned to explore the Wye valley and surrounding areas.

Trelleck is a lovely village rich in history and archaeology. The Pound itself is a cosy cottage which also has a long history. Trelleck is a gateway to some beautiful towns and there are castles galore. Highly recommended.

Very warm and cosy cottage, Jean the owner had left bread,butter,milk,and the best eggs we've had in a long time, altogether a very pleasant place to stay.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at The Pound.

A delightful cottage very cosy and warm and is much bigger inside than appears in the picture. The cottage is very well equipped and very well situated for Monmouth, Chepstow and surrounding areas such as The Forest Of Dean and Tintern Abbey. Jean is a lovely lady on hand if needed and we were very comfortable in the cottage. The local pub The Lion is at the top of the village a short walk from the cottage, the food is delicious and freshly cooked to order. The little local shop is just around the corner from the pub and sells lovely fresh bacon, sausages and a selection of provisions and newspapers . We liked the village very much very friendly and has a lovely church. We would stay here again

The Pound must be one of the most well equipped cottages we have ever stayed in and the cleanest.

Lovely thoughtful welcome pack. We were surprised just how spacious it was inside, a real tardis. Ideally situated between Chepstow and Monmouth. On the edge of the Forest of Dean which had great walking for our two Westies, Archie and Mollie. Great dog friendly pub just up the village with a roaring log fire, good food and chatty locals. Exceeded our expectations and we would definitely go there again.

Lovely area, Trellech is a good starting spot for seeing the area from.

The Pound, fascinating history and plenty big enough. Jean was very welcoming, we look forward to coming back.

Firstly you are met with a warm smile from both John & Jean, you go on to find that they have provided you with a few essentials, bread, butter ,milk, tea and coffee.

You then start to explore the cottage and find that you have book a clean, comfortable and well maintained property that suits all your needs, so you can immediately start to relax and enjoy your break. A trip to the local pub, and you are made to feel welcomed by all on both sides of the bar! So, what are the down sides, simply there are none! We travelled all around South Wales, and I cannot think of a better lace to do it from. We had a fantastic break, and we hope that you will too staying at The Pound

The owners John and Jean are really lovely people and you couldn't ask for nicer host.

The cottage had everything you need and it was my brother-in-laws 60th while away and John and Jean bought us a drink in the pub to help celebrate his birthday. It is a lovely cottage. Beds were lovely and clean and comfortable and the kitchen had everything you could want. Locals were very friendly and the village has a shop and a beautiful church and only a short drive from tourist attractions. There are also walks from your door if you like to take a stroll in the fields.

We shared the accommodation with many, many spiders so anyone with a fear of them wouldn't be able to stay there, The owners were very pleasant and helpful and everything we needed was provided.

Our break at The Pound was excellent.

The Pound is a lovely cottage with good facilities in a wonderful village, which contains a welcoming pub (The Lion) that serves real ales, good food and welcomes dogs. Trellech is about 4 miles from Monmouth and perfect for exploring the Wye valley and nearby Forest of Dean. We will return.

A superbly located holiday home, surrounded by local history.

The owners live on site and are very helpful and friendly. Being as the home is at a road junction, this is not the quietest home we have stayed in, but then again it's wasn't the noisiest either!. Also worth mentioning that the home is warm, the bedroom gets quite "Toasty". Would I stay here again? yes most certainly!

The owners were lovely and made our stay even more enjoyable.

Welcoming pack of flowers, tea, coffee, bread etc was unexpected but such a nice touch. The only criticism is being on at times a very busy road junction which did detract from the overall experience. Thanks again for a great stay and would highly recommend to anyone. The cottage was well presented and very well equipped.

The owners John and Jean had left fresh milk, bread, eggs and welsh cakes for us which was really appreciated. The area is very rural and tranquil. Chepstow, Monmouth and Abergavenny are all about 15 minutes away and Cardiff is around 50 minutes away. A true gem just across the border. However as stated in the details this cottage is directly next to a quite busy road and there is noise, it did not spoil our holiday at all but it is worth mentioning. We will definitely be returning to the Pound for a well earned break very soon.

A lovely little cottage in a great location for walking.

The village has a delightful pub, whoch is very welcoming and offers great food. For "limited" mobile reception, read "none", anywhere in the village.

The cottage was lovely - just right for me, my partner & our 11 year old son!

It was well sited for our trips to the Brecon Beacons & Forest of Dean. The hosts were wonderfully welcoming & we had a great time.

The Pound is one of the best cottages we have stayed at and a credit to the most friendly owners, John and Jean, who made us feel at ease from the minute we arrived.

The very generous welcome pack was a nice touch and John and Jean had a mine of information on the surrounding area that made it an even more enjoyable experience .We would not hesitate to recommend the Pound to anyone wanting to visit this beautiful part of Wales.

The property was absolutely delightful and the owners charming.

I felt instantly at home and wished I had been able to stay much longer. Cottage cosy and comfortable - had it rained all week I would have been more than happy to stay in. Location excellent. Some beautiful Wye Valley walks, close to Monmouth. The area is stunning in the autumn. I hope to return.

The Only fault, if you can call it that, is there is no carpet up the stairs, which is quite steep, even a strip up the middle would give you more confidence when going up or down.

. Also a bolt on each of the Bathrooms would afford a little more privacy. Overall we had a lovely stay at the Pound and our Hosts John & Jean were most welcoming, Eggs, Milk , Butter,Bread and some lovely Welsh cakes were there to start us off.
