Dinas Island known locally as Dinas Head or Pen Dinas is just a mile from the village of Dinas Cross. A pleasant 1 mile walk down a single track lane takes you down to Pwllgwaelod beach and the island rises 142 metres above it. Local fisherman set Lobster pots off the coast and around the Island and can often be seen landing their catch on the beach.
The land on the island is partly owned by the National Trust and the walk around its perimeter is really worth the effort. It is about 3 miles and should take about 2 hours to complete, longer if you stop and admire the dramatic scenery. Make sure you take your walking boots and are reasonably fit as it’s a long climb up and the path in places is uneven and rocky too. Once you get to the trig point at the top the views over to Fishguard and Strumble Head are really stunning.
At this point, you can make a decision to either walk the gentle top path across the island or the dramatic cliff path which is steep and narrow. As you walk around the path look out for porpoise and seals which are regulars along this stretch of coast and the jagged Stack Rock which is home to various breeding colonies of seabirds.
Approaching the last leg of the island the views to Newport and the surrounding coastline are fabulous. Cwm Yr Eglwys comes into view with the ruins of St Brynachs Church sitting just above the beach. The Path then drops down by the side of the beach if you keep going through the car park you will pick up the valley footpath – a gravel track suitable for wheelchairs and a haven for wildlife with badger trails, moorhens and foxholes it is exactly 2/3rd mile to the start of the walk and the car park at Pwllgwaelod where a welcome refreshment in the Old Sailors Pub can be enjoyed.
