Laugharne

Where is Laugharne? Situated on the bank of the River Taf and best known as being the home of Dylan Thomas, Laugharne is a picturesque riverside village in the county of Carmarthenshire.

Amongst all the pretty houses, there is also a ruined castle – the current structure dates from the 13th century and the castle has had quite a colourful history. There is a nice riverside walk which goes from the car park alongside the castle and on past the Dylan Thomas Boathouse and on to the house where he once lived – this now houses a cafe, art gallery and shop. There is also an exhibition of Dylan Thomas’ life.

laugharne wales

There are plenty of interesting sights to see in the village – from peaceful church walks to horseback rides along the river.

1. Dylan Thomas Boathouse

This iconic boathouse is where Dylan Thomas lived with his family, during the last four years of his life. Set on a clifftop overlooking the Tâf estuary, it’s easy to see where he got his inspiration from – it’s said that he wrote most of his major pieces while being here. Visitors can now take a walk through the house, before stopping for a cup of tea in the outside cafe next door. Aspiring poets won’t want to miss this attraction!

2. St Martin’s Church

St Martin’s Church is a grade II listed building set within the village. Around it, you’ll find a good choice of scenic walks – great for those stopping in dog-friendly cottages nearby!

3. The Dylan Thomas Birthday Walk

The Dylan Thomas Birthday Walk is a two-mile walking route that offers spectacular views of the estuary, the boathouse, and on clear days – glimpses of North Devon and Caldey Island. In 1944, Dylan Thomas wrote a poem about this particular walk which he enjoyed on his 30th birthday. Since then, visitors can enjoy complimentary gifts if they take a stroll along this route on their birthday – including free cakes and pizzas from the local pubs and cafes!

4. Laugharne Castle

Originally built in 1116, Laugharne Castle has gone through quite a few changes through the years. Once taken over as a Norman stronghold, it then became a Tudor manor house in the 16th century. Set within ornamental 19th-century gardens, it’s well worth a visit while you’re in the village.

5. Pendine Sands

If you’ve seen everything in the village, we’d recommend taking a drive over to Pendine Sands. Just a 10-minute drive from the village, this seven-mile stretch of golden sand is perfect for summer days spent by the shore.
