Hidden away in a Valley in the Cambrian Hills is Strata Florida Abbey. Not a huge amount remains of the Abbey today but you can make out where various buildings once stood and get a good idea of how impressive this structure would have looked in its heyday.
The Abbey’s roots date back to 1164 when it was founded by Robert FitzStephen. By the 16th Century it was dissolved with it’s contents and buildings being sold off. Today it is under the care of CADW and there are parking and refreshments available on-site. Dogs to be kept on a lead and toilets only for disabled or those with limited mobility.
Situated in Pontrhydfendigaid, the Red Lion offers a good varied choice of food with vegetarian and children’s options to choose from too. There is also a riverside beer garden with a slide for the kids.
Covering some 2000 acres, Cors Caron is Wales’ largest raised bog and is fed by the River Teifi which starts it’s journey to the coast in the Cambrian Hills which also feature as a backdrop to Cors Caron.
There are parking spaces and toilets on-site and the reserve offers many different walks to explore – one of which is a totally accessible circular path. There are also seating areas for picnics and bird hides if you like twitching.
