“We liked the proximity of Lower Town's quay and the walk alongside to Upper Town for shops.”

Whilst we acknowledge that the rental fee was low, we did expect to have handwash when we arrived, there was none. The teatowels were aged and stained and grey, and so we had to buy our own. Although the linen had been changed, the bedding in the main bedroom was frankly smelly. We had to clear some previous occupiers' old smelly rubbish from the shed to be collected by the binmen. We took away our own rubbish. Fortunately we did not need the heating, but if we had there were no ...

“We have stayed at Milkwood cottage two weeks a year for 6-7 yrs before Covid, so we are very used to it.”

The first thing we noticed was the slightly more overgrown front and back garden, then the toilet was 'soiled' which we scrubbed clean. In one bedroom there was dust and dirt plus blood stains on the pillow. The Freeview on the TV was useless, and the Wi-Fi to the TV was unstable, kept disconnecting and sometimes wouldn't reconnect try as we may. I managed to lock us out, I phoned a number and thankfully was told where to find a key. I think this should be made more clear in the information. As I said we have stayed here many times, we like the old cottage but, this made us think whether we will continue to come back here in the future. I think with the increase of electric cars an EV point would be a good idea for the future too. Sort these few points out and it will be a lovely place to stay.

“Fabulous location was what brought our rating up for this property - very near the harbour and perfect for many great days out within a 30 minute drive.”

Property just ok given the price, comfortable enough and kitchen very good with everything needed. Old properties are dusty so we can live with that but wasn’t as bad as other reviews had led us to believe. Overall needs some serious sprucing up though and the carpets need a good shampoo. Main downside was the garden which isn’t well maintained and the garden furniture unusable as very dirty. Extra furniture e.g. sunbeds, were mentioned as available in the shed but these too had a few years dust & cobwebs. Since I don’t come on holiday to spend time cleaning, we weren’t able to sit out & enjoy the weather. Rubbish situation very unclear and the stated bins couldn’t be found. We took rubbish to the public recycling bins but this aspect/instructions could be clearer.

“We had a great weekend at Milkwood Cottage.”

The cottage was as shown and I had read the previous comments about cleanliness and it was not as bad as people said, generally it was very clean. The only thing we noticed were some used nappies in the bathroom bin from previous guests, and although not cleanliness some-one had left a half empty bottle of water on the kitchen window-ledge. The cottage is very cute but it could do with a little maintenance/decorating as some areas look tired and some of the plug sockets need fixing to the wall better, especially in the main bed room. When we arrived we had to really push the front door to open it. The following day we were unable to open the door at all, fortunately there is a back-door so we were able to leave the property, and get back in again. The beds were really comfy and the kitchen has everything you need to make your own meals etc... The welcome pack was full of all sorts of information, including some recipes which was a lovely touch. The shower works well and there was plenty of hot water. Its in a lovely quiet area and we could always park right outside the cottage.

Cottage was dirty and had an infestation of wood louse, decor and furniture is dated and could do with a spruce up, local pub only opens Wednesday to Sunday and only accept cash, high town is a long walk up a very steep hill even then the shops only open 3 times a week

“As stated in the previous two reviews, this property was not clean.”

The toilet had long black hair stuck to it and weeks of grime on the seat; the bath and floor also hadn't been cleaned. The carpets throughout had not been vacuumed and the two red chairs and settee were covered in long, cream coloured dog hairs. The beams in the large bedroom had several webbs and cellar spiders in most corners. A previous review stated the bins were overflowing upon arrival, this seems to have been rectified by not providing a bin! There was a small, dirty food waste bin on the window sill in the kitchen, but nothing provided for general waste. I called Sykes Cottages who arranged for the cleaner to return. Upon arrival the cleaner apologised and stated her partner cleaned downstairs, while she was responsible for changing the linen upstairs (clean bedding and towels were provided). The cleaner spent around 5 minutes in the bathroom then came out and asked me to inspect it; she then offered to vacuum the settee and chairs, which she did. I thanked her and told her she could go as she said she had a BBQ to attend that evening. After she left, I cleaned the bathroom and vaccumed properly, whilst my husband cleaned the kitchen sides and cupboards. It is a shame that the property is dirty because you can see that the owner has spent a lot of money on the decor and furnishings. The property is pretty and is in an ideal location for the harbour, pubs and shops. There is a steep hill to climb into the main town, which was not a problem for us as we do a lot of dog walking. When we booked the cottage at the beginning of the year, the reviews were good and it's only recent ones which are not.

“The property was not cleaned nor beds made before our arrival.”

We rang the emergency number and the cleaner came within an hour and did a quick job to get us settled. Over the next day we realised this cleaning was inadequate, with lots of cobwebs remaining in corners, on ceilings and down the side of furniture and weeks of dust on top of taller furniture. This was reported to Sykes on the morning of our second full day who promised a repeat cleaning visit that day, and later revised that promise to the following day. The promised cleaner never showed up at any point in the week. Other than the poor state of the cleaning we found the cottage to be well equipped and fairly comfortable. We found the bed in the larger bedroom too soft and uncomfortably bouncy for 2 people. It would have been helpful to know in advance there's no phone reception at the property.

“The picture is deceiving, probably my fault I should have been more thorough but I thought I was booking a one floor cottage from the picture.”

I booked this for a short getaway for my 92 year old mum having just lost her husband of 70 years. It turns out that this picture is the rear of the property, all the bedrooms were up a flight of stairs, very difficult for my mum and the bathroom was up and down steps even more difficult especially in the night. There was a tripping hazard from the archway of the lounge area on route to the kitchen and stairs to first floor. It was very cold in the cottage and no logs to light the fire until we asked for them, on lighting the fire the room was filled with smoke which played havoc with our breathing, not good for my mum's asthma. The kitchen bin was overflowing with rubbish from previous guests and there was evidence of rodent mess in the cupboard. The curtains over the door an archway are in need of cleaning or replacing. I tried several times to get hold of an agent to sort these problems and eventually got someone to come out to rectify, the bunch of flowers he brought to pacify us were a nice gesture but in no way made up for the disappointing start to our vacation

“A really lovely cottage in a convenient and pretty location (esp as I'd got temporary mobility issues).”

Just one real gripe: with my Health and Safety hat on. Despite the warning stickers 'caution very hot water'... the hot water throughout is scalding hot. A small child, having been told 10 times by loving parents not to use the hot water, will forget. Can you not turn down the thermostat? It's really dangerous. Otherwise a fab break.

“Milkwood is very, very nicely appointed and catered cottage.”

It sits in an excellent position with very easy access to the Harbour. Our party was 4 adults, one toddler, one dog and it was cosy and fine for us. Most mornings began with a swim off of the slipway followed by hot drinks and cake in the superb Yacht Club cafe. We all had a lovely week there.

The location and cottage itself was first class. The beds were not so comfortable but sure this is due to the age of the cottage which is what made the cottage so appealing. Would recommend and easy process to book through Sykes. All in all a fabulous holiday with great memories made. Thank you

“The cottage could be so much more as it's in a great location near the harbour.”

Unfortunately the heating was on constantly in the family room. A wobbly toilet that was smelly, the double beds were very hard and the front gate was broken. The decor could do with upgrade re paint. The front door was difficult to open and is the glass toughened in both doors. The gardens were neglected too. The sofa and chairs were comfortable and the cottage was well equipped and thank you for the delicious bottle of wine. I think it was expensive with all these flaws and I prefer to be open and honest. Unfortunately Sykes Cottages has let me down this time Julie

“In general we enjoyed our stay at Milkwood Cottage although some days it was a bit chilly (heating instructions were incomprehensible so we mostly sat on the sofa wrapped in blankets.”

) Basic soap or handwash in the bathroom and washing up liquid (and dishwasher tablets, although we never used the dishwasher) in the kitchen would have been more appreciated than the 'welcome pack' of a bottle of wine, which we didn't need. Lastly, the shops in upper town are only a short walk away but it's a long haul up a big hill to get there - folks with limited mobility should be aware!

“We had such a lovely stay in Milkwood Cottage.”

The cottage itself was very warm and cosy with a lovely garden set in a very peaceful location. The local pub The Ship was less than 2 min walk from the Cottage with a few other pubs only a 10 min walk up the hill in main Fishguard. It was handy having a large Co-op and several takeaways also in main Fishguard. The cottage was a great base for day trips, we visited many places during our stay. The locals were so welcoming and friendly making us feel at home, we would definitely recommend this cottage.

“Such a cosy cottage in a wonderful location, tucked away just behind the quay in Lower Fishguard, surrounded by trees and little cottages.”

It's comfortable and quiet and had everything we needed, the garden was just perfect when the sun shone (it did sometimes!), and we could walk to the sea, the cliffs and the upper town easily. We chose the cottage because it had room for a 5.5 metre sea kayak in the garden (which limits your choices!) and are so glad we did.

Well equipped kitchen, and nice to have use of sun loungers and bbq stored in the shed. Garden was great and the terrace was lovely and sheltered, it was so good to enjoy our meals outside, weather permitting, a lovely sun trap . Great base for exploring the lovely walks and scenery .

A couple of issues. The cottage smelt rather unpleasant, which wasn't nice. The hot water was silly scalding hot. Fire place not swept. No washing up liquid.

“Sweet, quaint cottage.”

Comfortable bed but we had to turn it 180 degrees otherwise it was significantly lower at the head end. No power on the otherside of the room so we had no bedside lights. Perhaps the bed should have been put on blocks to even it out. Other than that it was a lovely cottage and well equipped but a baking sheet for pizzas would have been handy! Great location in Lower Town near a lovely pub and the harbour, walks etc yet set away from the main road.

It was well equipped and had a great enclosed garden for the dog. It was however, dirty and there were cobwebs everywhere. It was dark and had very low ceilings.The bathroom was tiny and had extremely poor ventilation which meant it was getting mouldy.

“The cottage was extremely clean you could smell it very reassuring ,we did still take our own bleach and wipes.”

The heating was a bit tricky but ok in the end . The hosts did make sure we were ok which is always good. Fishguard is a gorgeous little fishing harbour very friendly ,The little pub the Ship was very good again very Covid clean very good with spacing. Would highly recommend we have a dog Newport Beach fine with dogs and St David’s beach great but can only take dogs at the end of September . We enjoyed it so much we are going next year

“Milkwood Cottage was exactly what we were hoping for!”

It had everything required to be comfortable and cozy, the kitchen had everything you could need, the shower was great and the parking easy. The cottage has outside seating at both front and rear and both areas are secure for dogs. The cottage's the location is fabulous! We loved the walks on our doorstep with our dog, the convenience of the shops at the top of the hill and the choice of pubs within a ten minute walk. Everyone we met was super friendly and keen to chat. A wonderful cottage and a wonderful place - was very reluctant to leave!

“Having been led to believe that additional measures would have been taken re Covid - there were none!”

Nothing had been removed eg books etc and especially foodstuffs left by previous guests/owners. Only windows were wide open rendering the cottage rather damp. It took us 2 days to get the cottage warm. It was so dirty I was compelled to clean the kitchen thoroughly and wipe down surfaces throughout the cottage. As for cobwebs .......and slugs...... Despite being chocolate box on the exterior this cottage is badly in need of redecoration and refurb. However crockery, cutlery, kitchen appliances were good.

Please be assured that we take the Covid situation seriously hence the provision of soap and antibacterial hand gel in the welcome pack. We work with a reputable Fishguard cleaning company and will be sharing your feedback with them. We do leave books and sundries at the cottage and some guests find this useful, however, we will review our approach based on your and other guests` feedback. We are in the process of renewing the cottage and installed, at the beginning of the year, a new set of storage heaters; one in the living room, one in each bedroom and an induction heater in the kitchen in addition to the open fire. “We loved Milk wood Cottage and were really pleased to find it had a lovely enclosed and private garden which made up for the living room being quite dark.”

It is very well equipped and it was great not having to buy things like washing up liquid, cooking oil and salt/pepper etc. The bed was SO comfy and it was really peaceful with very little road noise or passing traffic. Thank you for a lovely week - just wish it could have been longer!

The property

This pretty pink holiday cottage is in the old fishing village and harbour of Lower Town, Fishguard.

The cottage is just a few minutes walk from the quay and slipway, where there are excellent launching facilities for sailors, windsurfers etc.

Local fishermen often provide fishing trips for those who wish to catch their supper or you can go and listen to tales of "the one that got away" in the local pub (The Ship Inn).A walk up the hill leads you to Fishguard town which has a good selection of pubs, eateries, shops and galleries.

Newport, St Davids, Porthgain, Strumble Head and Abereiddy are all close by.

The cottage is also ideally situated for the keen walkers (the coastal bus passes through the village) and is close to the beautiful and spectacular Pembrokeshire Coastal Path and the Gwaun Valley.If you are holidaying with your dog, at low tide the harbour provides ample space for them to enjoy as too does the coastal path and the local Marine Walk which starts at Lower Town and goes on to Goodwick.
