Hawthorns rests in the heart of the Gower National Landscape, a peaceful haven in Scurlage, Swansea. Surrounded by natural beauty and offering off-road parking for four vehicles, this welcoming retreat invites families and friends to unwind, reconnect, and explore. With an enclosed garden, thoughtful amenities, and a woodburning stove to gather around, it also extends a warm invitation to one well-behaved dog.

Set back from the lane with neat gravel parking, Hawthorns presents a double-fronted façade that hints at the comfort within. Step inside and feel the gentle rhythm of the house unfold—wooden flooring underfoot leads you through spaces designed for ease and togetherness.

The kitchen/diner is a natural gathering point, where wooden cabinetry and a striking map feature wall spark conversation and curiosity. A large dining table anchors the room, ready for shared meals and stories, while artwork throughout the home adds warmth and personality.

From the kitchen, drift into the first sitting room, where a woodburning stove glows beneath a timber mantelpiece. Deep brown sofas and a soft rug invite you to settle in, whether for a film night or quiet reflection.

The second sitting room offers a change of pace, with a corner sofa and mounted TV, gently lit by the flicker of an electric fire. Nearby, a cloakroom with basin, heated towel rail and WC adds convenience to the ground floor.

Upstairs, four restful bedrooms await, each with plush carpet underfoot and calming décor. Two double rooms offer peaceful retreats, one enhanced by an en-suite with walk-in shower, basin and WC. Two twin rooms complete the sleeping arrangements, all designed to encourage deep, uninterrupted rest. A bright family bathroom with crisp white tiles, bath, basin and WC serves the remaining rooms.

Step outside into the wrap-around garden, where a well-kept hedge frames the lawn and the patio offers a quiet spot to sip your morning brew. As daylight fades, birdsong lingers in the air and the scent of evening blooms drifts across the grass—an invitation to pause and savour the stillness.

Beyond the garden gate, the Gower Peninsula unfolds in all its glory. Wander the windswept trails of Rhossili and the South Gower Coast, where cliffs meet sea and sheep graze in emerald fields. Having stayed in various holiday lets in Gower on numerous previous occasions I’d have to admit that Scurlage would not have been our first choice of location.

But a late booking and 3 dogs did somewhat limit our available options. However, Hawthorns more than compensated for the lack of a sea view. The cottage was spotlessly clean, comfortable and perfectly suited to our needs with all necessary facilities and some very welcome additions like the coffee machine (with even the coffee pods included.)The owners provided lots of useful information about local attractions and recommended eating establishments ( many of these echoing our own previous experiences) and the giant os map on the kitchen wall was a real boon. The owners have clearly given a great deal of careful thought as to how to ensure guests enjoy their stay, and have succeeded beyond our expectations. And a big shout-out too to whoever does the cleaning/maintenance - the house was immaculate on our arrival: can’t promise we left it as we found it but we did try!

So much potential here, great location….

. but not well maintained, poor cleanliness, general lack of care. Everything felt like it needed a proper clean, smears all over windows, sticky feeling in kitchen, nasty dirt smear on wall in lounge area. General observations…Mouldy shower curtain, rusty baking trays, toaster doesn’t work unless you hold the knobs down, bed and mattresses worn out, noisy and uncomfortable. Minimal basic supplies, less than 1 loo roll per toilet… each one already partly used. Empty soap containers in bathrooms. You get the idea, just need’s some care and attention. The beds were clean, and it is in a great location for exploring the Gower.

Hi Wendy, We are so sorry to hear that. We do ask that the cleaners ensure there is a spare unused loo roll and to top up/replace the soap so our sincere apologies. If you had reached out at the beginning of your stay the cleaners could have been asked to return to resolve a lot of your concerns. It is a shame about the shower curtain as it was only replaced at the beginning of the summer and we are ultimately hoping to replace this with a door over the winter. Unfortunately we can’t do anything to improve the stay if we aren’t informed while the guest is still there. We apologise as this is a shame it impacted your stay and thank you for letting us know. The property was far better than expected Everything that one could need was supplied In a perfect location for access to port Eynon and Rhossili As we were there to scatter my daughters ashes off the coast, we had other family members come and visit.

. The hawthorns was a perfect reception... The neighbour introduced himself to my son in law before we got there and arranged for a lawn mowing We had a lovely weekend considering the circumstances we were there.. I couldn't recommend the place more highly... Eleven out of ten...

It's a shame I need to write this as this property has a lot of potential, but was really let down by the lack of cleanliness, especially in the kitchen.

Initial impressions were that it looked clean, however once we started to use the kitchen we noticed products hasn't been refilled (no dishwasher tabs, no washing up liquid, coffee was gone off, amongst others), and some of the cookware was filthy (baking trays covered in grease and an oven that smelt dirty when cooking and even had a message on it to say it needed cleaning). Bedding and towels were clean but the ensuite had dirt at the bottom of the bin, shower curtain needed replacing and the floor was far from clean. Bedside light not working in one bedroom and windows were locked with no obvious key. The owner tried to contact the cleaners when we informed, them but they didn't respond and we ended up having to buy bits for the kitchen. Owner offered a small refund as a gesture which we are waiting to come through. The space was good, nice size garden, good location for what we wanted, but unfortunately once you start to notice the lack of cleanliness it puts a downer on everything. Would recommend the owners find a new cleaner as they'll lose repeat guests with the current ones.

We are so sorry about your experience. As per our messages we have informed the cleaners to rectify this and photos would be greatly received to further enhance the feedback. We have done spot checks ourselves following previous cleans and have always found the house satisfactory including the floors and oven. However since your feedback both our neighbours and ourselves have personally been to the property to check and not only was there plenty of the original provided handwash available in both bathrooms and under the sink in the kitchen but the windows were checked and can all be opened. The bulb has gone in the bedside lamp so we have changed this and thank you for bringing this to our attention. From the photos the cleaner sent following their clean there was no apparent sign on the oven and everything looks clean. Unfortunately without the requested photos there is limited evidence to support this review regarding the cleanliness issue. We will remain vigilant however as we recognise there can always be times when things don’t go to plan. We do always really appreciate the feedback. Thank you so much and if you do wish to share photos/evidence it would be gratefully received.
