“The cottage was lovely and had everything we needed and more - even fresh eggs from the chickens in the garden.”

The host was very helpful and welcoming. We would certainly go back again. The surrounding countryside was lovely and we were close to some good amenities.

The property

A cosy cottage, attached to the owner’s B&B and surrounded by working farmland and walks along the River Usk on the Usk Valley Walk, on the edge of the hamlet of The Bryn, just four miles from the popular town of Abergavenny.

The cottage is just a short walk from the village of Penpergwm in the undulating Welsh border countryside and just a short drive away lies a hub of fantastic restaurants and one reason why many people visit the area.

A real gastronomic haven, as well as being situated close to amazing mountains and walks, the cottage is a perfect base for couples and small families looking to sample the surrounding area and its foodie delights.

Set over the ground floor there are two bedrooms, one large with an en-suite family bathroom, and a smaller bedroom with full-size single bunk beds.

There is an open plan living area with a well-equipped kitchen, a dining area and a comfy seating area with a TV, where you can relax and possibly enjoy some of the delightful local produce you have picked up on your day of exploring.

Outside, you can sit in the small courtyard garden and enjoy a glass of something cold, whilst discussing the day’s events; the children can explore the adjacent garden with its resident chickens and collect eggs.

The whole area offers stunning views and walks across a variety of terrain, but is also rich in Industrial Heritage.

The Big Pit National Coal Museum and surrounding Ironworks is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a wonderful area to spend the day.

You are also ideally placed to explore the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons), walk up the Sugar Loaf, Skirrid or Blorange Mountains or take a short drive and explore the stunning Wye Valley, with the striking ruins of Tintern Abbey.

The whole area offers numerous outdoor activities such as pony trekking, canoeing or fishing on the Wye or Usk rivers, as well as many footpaths and cycle routes that can be explored.

Although the whole area is full of activities, this cottage is within an hour’s drive of Cardiff, the cultural capital city of Wales, The Royal Welsh Showground in Builth Wells, The Royal Forest of Dean and Bristol.

Easy to reach is also the world-famous Hay-on-Wye, with its myriad of boutique-style shops, renowned book shops, and of course, the literary festival providing a massive choice if you are looking for a packed holiday experience.

Explore the Royal Forest of Dean or a day of shopping in Bristol which is just an hour away.

A perfect base for couple or families to explore the area, with a variety of countryside, from mountains, forest or river valleys and striking historic towns of Abergavenny or Monmouth.
