But there's room for improvement. Firstly, the windows upstairs are on the brink of falling to bits, with rotting wood, cracked panes and broken arms. The cobwebs covering them in and out tell you when they were last checked. Second, the Velux windows let light in, but no air (we couldn't get a single one open, so long is it since they were opened), and in some cases unwanted summer heat (the screens had worn/come away).
The main boiler is in the second bedroom, and this was churning out quite a lot of heat throughout our stay, so if you're staying in summer, be aware.
It's also quite gloomy in the main living/eating area, even with the lamps - the accompanying photos have all been lightened artificially (as owners or their agents are wont to do).
And, curiously, other people's photos adorn the walls, and dusty shelves, cupboards and rooms are filled with other people's stuff - presumably the owner's family's. Some visitors may appreciate this (there are boardgames and books and toys, etc), but it felt to us as though someone had gone off for a week and you're occupying their house till they come back. Honestly, I woud rather have space in the kitchen to put tins and packets, for example. (And a non-rusty toaster!)
The shower is nice and modern (which inevitably means you can't turn it on till you're in it!), but if you run it for moe than a few minutes, the water starts backing up and will overflow the shallow rim of the floor. Showers do need regular plunging.
Finally, the nice flooring in the living/dining area is let down by the fact that it's not finished at the edges where it meets the uneven walls - there are simply thin channels of building detritus running round the edges.
On the other hand, the cottage was reasonably priced, at least compared to many of the ludicrous sums owners almost everywhere else are asking simply because it's July/August and they know they can fleece parents.
So, a decent holiday venue, but one which needs a bit more maintenance than it's been getting for a while.
