As mentioned, the Elan and Claerwen Valleys are just a stone’s throw away from Rhayader. The Elan Valley Trail is a perfect way to explore, starting west of Rhayader and finishing 8 miles further up the valley at Craig Goch Dam.

Avid wildlife watchers will be ecstatic to find out that there’s a red kite feeding station in Rhayader. Wild red kites are fed every day, with some days seeing around 400 red kites at once. The Gilfach Nature Reserve is another hotspot for wildlife; catch sight of wild otters, wild salmon and a myriad of butterflies.
